Planning a Kitchen Renovation

Having a nice kitchen where you are comfortable is very important, especially if you are someone that enjoys cooking. That is why if you are tired of your old kitchen, getting a kitchen renovation can be a great idea.

Planning

The first thing you should do is make a list so that planning is easier and so that you can later explain efficiently to your builder what you want. You should prepare two of them, one should have everything you want to change, remove, or add, and the other should have what you want to keep or to remain the same.

Other things you should do in advance are to plan a budget, take kitchen measurements and set what goals you are trying to accomplish with this project (improving functionality, fitting it to your style or simply increasing resell value).

What type of renovation?

According to what you will be doing, there are 3 types of kitchen renovations:

  • Cosmetic Renovation: these are simple renovations that give your kitchen an update. If you are happy with the plan of your kitchen and just want to make some small changes, these are great. These renovations include works such as adding a new coat of paint, new appliances, new countertop, lighting …
  • Remove and Re-install Renovation: these will usually not affect the layout of your kitchen either but consist of bigger changes to your kitchen. Usually, all kitchen cabinets are removed, and new ones are installed in the same place. You can also add in any cosmetic renovations to get it all done at once. You should consider that this is usually a long job that can take a few weeks and limit your access to your kitchen, so make sure to plan accordingly.
  • Custom Renovation: as you can probably guess from the name, these renovations can include anything from expanding your kitchen to changing the layout of your kitchen.

What to renovate?

When renovating, especially in custom renovations you will be changing how your kitchen “feels”. Therefore, you should take into account the following factors when planning as the changes you make could affect them, or you could plan some changes according to these factors to make your ideal kitchen.

  • Lighting: when talking about lighting you should of both the light coming from outside and the kitchen’s lighting. There are many ways of improving your lighting such as adding under-cabinet lights, adding a skylight, or adding light dimmers.
  • Appliances: if you want to fully renovate your kitchen you should see if any appliances need changing.  You can also move appliances such as a washing machine into another room and fit in a new appliance such as a dishwasher in its place.
  • Size and layout: if you want to increase the size and layout of the kitchen you should try and find how you can make the most of the space you have available. You can also connect your kitchen to other parts of the house such as the dinner or the garden by dividing with a sliding glass door.
