6 Types of Home Extensions

Building an extension is a great way of adding space for an extra bedroom or an office to your home.

There are 6 main home extensions, which one is best for you varies according to the size of your land and the style of your home.

1. Single Storey

Single storey extensions are ground-level extensions that usually connect to the rear or side of the building. These are great for increasing your kitchen or living space and usually falls under Permitted Development as long as it does extend over 8 metres from the wall of a detached home or 6 metres for semi-detached homes.

2. Rear Home Extension

Rear home extensions are added to the back of the home usually and they can be single or double-storey depending on the size of your garden.

Since these extensions are behind your house they are a great way of adding a new room to your home while keeping your privacy by not being on the front side of the house.

3. Side Return Extension

If you have a space on the side of your property that is never used, a side return extension might be a great addition to your home. You can turn that empty space that isn’t used into a bedroom, office or for extending your kitchen.

In some cases, you might be connecting your property to a neighbouring one thus sharing the wall. We recommend that you discuss the planning with your neighbour before building.

4. Garage Conversion

If you don’t have any issues looking for parking space around your home, a great way of increasing your home space is by converting your garage into a home extension. Garage conversions are also great as they allow you to create an extension while reducing your construction costs.

If your garage does not have a floor on top of it, you can build an above-garage room extension.

5. Wrap-Around Semi-detached

As the name says, these extensions wrap around both the rear and the side of the house creating an L-shaped extension. These are great for maximizing the space of your home while still keeping some garden space for you to enjoy.

6. Two Storey/ Multi-Storey Extension

Multi-storey extensions can be built on any side of your house. You can choose to build two rooms one on top of the other or you can simply build a room such as a dining room with a high ceiling.

These types of extensions can only be built in detached or semi-detached houses that have side space or a garden. You should take into account that costs will be higher for this type of extension and you will require planning permission.
