4 Tips for Finding a Builder

If you are planning to get some work done on your home and you don’t know any builders you might be lost wondering where to start and worried that you might choose the wrong person for the job. Today we will be going over our top tips you should take into account when looking for a builder.

Plan Details

Before you start looking for a builder you should have a good idea of what you want so that you can properly explain what you want to the builder. Look online for examples you like, write down any details you saw that you might want to add, write down any questions and prepare your budget.

Ask Around

Ask family and friends that have had similar work done if they liked the quality of the work and behaviour of the builder. Ask them to refer you to the builder so that you can later contact them. You should contact builders that you find online through business directories where you can also check their reviews. Ask if they have examples of similar work they have done and about their experience with such work.

Obtain a Quote

Ask builders for a quote when presenting your idea. Get all details in writing regarding what is covered and what is not, so that you don’t end up with any unexpected costs. We recommend that you get at least 3 quotes. You should also ask if planning permission is required, if they are insured and if you need to apply for Building Regulations approval.

Signing the Contract

Make sure that all details about the job are down in writing. The contract should include the following: outline the work, the cost for the job and materials, start/completion date, lavatory and eating arrangements, security, working hours, safety, waste disposal and payment plans.

We also recommend that you avoid VAT-free deals as they do not offer valid contracts and have no proof of payment. You will usually not be asked to pay upfront and be straight about the payment terms.

We hope that our tips help you find a suitable builder, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding builders or work you want to get done in your home.
